I have worked with the master craftsman and CAD/CAM expert Gordon Burnett on a research programme called Making Sense: an exploration of ways of knowing generated through practice and reflection

This practice-led research poses the question:

'What can be known by making that could not

be known by any other means?

This inquiry has produced several publications including a chapter in the book Material Inventions, edited by Estelle Barrett and Barbara Bolt, 2014.

"In the higher stages of skill, there is a

constant interplay between tacit knowledge

and self-conscious awareness, the tacit knowledge serving as an anchor, the

explicit awareness serving as critique and corrective."
