RESEARCH

As a reflective practitioner research (with a small 'r') was an integral part of my professional process. At its most basic level any piece of work requires the articulation of a problem or challenge, investigation of materials, forms, contexts.

This kind of visual inquiry for me initially takes place in sketchbooks, and then in real space, on the right scale with real materials (e.g. the full scale model in paper and wood for "Receiver").

Such models are what I call 'approximations' - three dimensional sketching. Only after an extensive period of idea generation, development, testing, and evaluation might any idea go on to be resolved in the right materials on the right scale. So familiarity with the fundamental processes of research was embedded in my practice.
